The Towpath Code

We want everyone to enjoy our canal and towpath.

Please be thoughtful and considerate when using the towpath by observing the following at all times.

  • Pedestrians must always have priority
  • Dogs must be kept on a short lead. Handlers must always pick up after their dogs and dispose of waste in dog bins provided or by taking it home.
  • Cyclists must slow down for others. Please ring your bell when approaching others and dismount where signage requires.
  • Joggers should proceed singly or accompanied by not more than 2 other persons and slow down for others.
  • Take extra care when passing people, especially children and those less mobile, pets and wildlife.
  • Respect people using the waterway for activities like angling, boating or paddle sports.
  • Wheelchairs, mobility aids, cycles and legal e-bikes are allowed but must be ridden responsibly.
  • E-scooters, motorbikes, modified e-bikes and other unauthorised vehicles are not allowed.
  • Horses are not allowed.
  • Please do not litter the towpath or dump rubbish in the canal. Take litter home or place in waste bins provided.
  • Please report anti-social behaviour to the Police or Stroud District Council at www.stroud.gov.uk/report-it/antisocial-behaviour or using the hotline number 0800 075 0699M.

Remember: Share the Space, Drop your Pace, It’s a Special Place

Public Space Protection Orders, made by Stroud District Council, apply to the towpath. See Public Spaces Protection Orders (including dog fouling) for further information.
